Brilliant Minds is a great program to introduce in schools because social skills is not something that is focused on anymore.
You already teach your students core values and traits of good character. You have already adopted rules and policies to support a bullying prevention program. Now, how do you teach the skills to support these values and proactively prevent bullying? How do you gain authentic buy-in from teachers and motivate them to be enthusiastic about teaching SEL skills?
Brilliant Minds manages an enrichment program at your school that will…
Support your staff for two years by managing parent contact, parent meetings, marketing, stipends, enrollment, ongoing training, and mentoring.
According to recent research, teachers and administrators across the nation are documenting positive effects on the school environment and academics from skill based lessons in Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). SEL has recently been proven to assist students in successfully learning how to handle conflict, communicate clearly, solve problems, and perform better on standardized tests (CASEL, 2009).
In a review of 200 SEL programs across the nation, kids who received SEL training increased pro-social behaviors such as liking school, attendance, and behaving well in class by 10 percentile points; while drug use, bullying, and violent behaviors in these children declined by 10 percentile points. Most relevant to your Annual Yearly Progress, academic achievement was boosted by 11 to 17 percentile points (Goleman, 2008).
A growing number of schools are integrating elements of emotional learning into the school day. Most of these programs are fragmented, short-term, and poorly built-in to the school structure. According to Maurice Elias, Rutgers University Psychology Professor, “the best programs take no less than three years” to achieve a level of integration where teachers are comfortable and students are showing benefits (Edutopia, 2009).
